Developer Perception to Microsoft’s Acquisition of GitHub

With responses from over 240 developers belonging to the Linux distributions and Berkeley Software Distributions (i.e., BSD), the results provide insights into what developers think of GitHub and its acquisition by Microsoft. We hope the dataset informs the polarity of perceptions and effects of this acquisition that occurred early June 2018.

With the motivation, we designed a survey to collect unbiased opinions. Furthermore, we then distributed our survey to the community of Linux and BSD developers.

Our preliminary results are shown in three parts (a) the demographics and perceptions of GitHub, (b) perceptions of the acquisition and (c) the effect of the acquisition .

Finally, we are grateful to all developers that took some of their important time away to help us with our survey. This was not a solo effort, please check out our team.
